Team XRAY – The Proline Challange Experience

September 1st, 2010

An XRAY race report from the Proline Challenge 2010 @ Slough

The last weekend in August & long Bank holiday weekend for many years now has been the Proline challange, again this year it would return to the Remote world track or better known as Slough. Rain all week had made any prep work very difficult but was a blessing in disguise as it would help the track groove up very quickly once racing started. The large marque gave enough pitting for all that wanted to use it with the track & facilities as usuall spot on showing why the sponsor CML & Proline only want to use this venue.

For Xray we had several international drivers Christopher Mccauley & Barkley Abernethy from N Ireland, Anthony Cabot & Davy Bales from France. Ricky Burnett, Jamie Kerr & Ben Kennett for RcDisco. Team Xray UK the usual motely crew of Brennan Ralls & Reece Sawyer although Reece was short of Tony his pit man dad this weekend but we took him under the wing for his first solo flight.

Bren pre Finals

Saturday was set aside for practice in a 10 minute run non timed for all then 3 timed runs of 5 minutes with your best time to used for a reseed. For this event Reece & Bren run some new parts which from the start showed great promise, for them it was a great oppertunity having just raced a national the previous week knew what a stock car would perform like. They would continue to run these parts because as the track evolved the balance of the car was very good making the car work better in all aspects of the track. The track started to groove up quickly & on the smooth flowing track meant times would be very close. Bren & Reece had good runs to end up in the top 2 heats with the rest of the team also happy ended up in good heats which would help there passage through qualifying.

Reece car wheeelie power

Sunday & qualifying day Reece was the top of our pile with a pace good enough easily for TQ if not for some lady luck, several times he was top of the leader board but for his favourite hairpin that cost him several times through out the day but was safe in the semi. Was suprised to see the concrete there on the monday thought it was to mysteriously vanish over night. On the other hand silky smooth Bren would run 3 mistake free runs to secure his semi position, the final 2 rounds more test parts where trialled again showing even more promise.

Bren car proline

For Barkley, Christopher & Davy all would secure grids in the 1/8ths so most enjoying good runs & a happy Proline qualifying.

Monday & finals day, with the track still in great shape grooved up & no dirt out of place what more could you wish for. Plenty of wrenching in the pits & tyre glueing kept the team very busy on the run up to the respected finals. Both Barkley & Christopher bumped to the 1/4’s, with Barkley wanting value for money this weekend pulled a demon drive to make the semi, with a grin & smile im sure toughed on the back of his head ( great drive buddy ).

Barkley & Bren

Reece was first out for us in the semi & a great drive kept him 3rd all race till near the end when a back marker did not move when repeatedly told to took him out bumping him to 4th but still a main place.
Bren & Barkley in the other semi would both get good starts, unfortunatelly Barkley flamed out exiting the pits loosing any chance now of progressing. Bren drove another mistake free 20 minutes, his smooth driving style gave an easy 10 minute fuel stop & huge advantage. With a good battle with Graham Alsop all race would take the 4th spot & grid in the main. For the grid it was semi time based & Bren would get his lucky 7 spot & Reece due to the back marker bumped to 11th through times but an hour long main a few meters is nothing.

The Main with all the prestige & photos, hype of the start & 10 minute call due to radio interference yep we had it all. With all the build up again & cars to the line the flag dropped & was off, Bren held station in 7th for the 1st few laps & Reece too, although from what i heard there was plenty of shouting near the back so maybe not so clean there. Reece worked his way through & upto Bren tucking in behind at around the 20 minute point & into the 6/7th spot, both looking very comfy & set for a good finish. Well I hoped but for Bren’s his race was about to change as the car collapsed off a jump crashing relogating him to the back as the marshall was running the other way to another car. From here the car just felt odd & was unable to corner or jump as fast , turned out the shock seal had blown so understandably the pace had gone. Reece on the other hand drove a great race to finish 5th & top of our pile, missing his corner all race I believe great run buddy.
That was it another great event, ran like clockwork all to the thanks of Sponsor CML & Proline with Dave duggan, Race crew of Sue & Kevin Griffin, Diane & Steve Merry, Adrian Svenson & June Perry so thank you for such a great event.

2010 Proline Result

The XRAY Touring Car Team travelled to Halifax for round 4 of the BRCA Championship. With a super fast track, it was all about carrying good corner speed and the T3 was up to the job!

Halifax Track

XRAY’s – BRCA National at the Cotswolds Track

July 12th, 2010

The second BRCA National was held at the Cotswolds track, next to Kemble Airfield. All the top UK and Ireland drivers were in attendance, with Atsushi Hara making the trip over from Asia to compete in his first BRCA National.

Practise started early Saturday morning, with many drivers choosing to run their race tyres in preparation for qualifying later on. Cotswolds is an unusual track where old tyres are faster and the tarmac is very kind on them, so one set can do many races!

The weather remained perfect all through Saturday, with no rain and reasonable temperatures of around 20°C. Due to the perfect conditions the track record was improved on by around 7s, and nearly 20 drivers went faster than the old track record!

At the end of qualifying, in modified 2 XRAY cars made the final, Jonathan Aird in 5th and Stefan Chodzynski in 7th.

This was Stef’s first National A final, with him taking a 3rd place in round 5 of qualifying he made the final easily in 7th place, out-qualifying Atsushi Hara.

1. Elliott Harper
2. Chris Grainger
3. Colin Price
4. Olly Jefferies
5. Jonathan Aird – XRAY T3
6. Andy Moore
7. Stefan Chodzynski – XRAY T3
8. Russell Williams
9. Atsushi Hara
10. John Pape

Stefan had three solid A finals with scores of 6th and two 5th places, which placed him 7th overall.

Jonathan suffered from some rough racing in the finals and was unlucky not to finish higher after running in 4th in the first final and 2nd in the 3rd before having incidents with other cars.

The XRAY 808 BRCA Season starts @ Rd 1 Frankley!!

April 19th, 2010

XRAY Factory Team Driver Jon Hazlewood drove a rock solid qualifier and A Final to take home a well deserved 5th place overall after the first round of the 2010 series BRCA Nationals over at the Frankley off road track just south of Birmingham.

Jon H Sunglasses brca_rd1-167 Jon H Car_brca_rd1-158

(Will this guy ever wear Team Clothing??)

The BRCA Series often starts here at Frankley, and it is a familiar track amoungst many of the National Drivers, so competition is tight and mistakes often cost hard here…

After Qualifiying, Jon was top XRAY driver in 6th, with Reece Sawyer in the B Main and Bren Rallls not having the easiest of days in the C Main… all got a chance to bump up though!!

We had a suprise in our Welsh Team Driver – Ben Williams bumping up through the lower finals into the C Main having looked incredibly quick in the E Main and D Main as he bumped up winning both those finals and looking menacing in the back of the C Main after posting lap times well capable of the A Final pace!!

Ben Williams brca_rd1-148      Ben Rostrum brca_rd1-140

(This is a very happy looking No 11 – Ben Williams…  Good going buddy!!)

Bren continued to struggle, just having one of those days and missed out on the bump…. Ben marched on thou and swept into the B Main having again looked outstanding on the track with arguably the only XRAY Team car that looked like it could be pushed hard on this tricky-hi-grip surface (Hmm looks like we’ll have to test that set up another time)!!

With Reece and Ben setting off for the start of the B Main, it was ultimately going to prove too much for Ben as his clutch bearings could take no more bump ups and that put the end to what was looking like a surprise entry into the Top Final, however, Reece managed just that and joined Jon in the A Final with a solid run.

It has to be said that in the run up to this race, we as an XRAY Team were not 100% confident in our set ups, finding the car grip rolling a little too easy for our liking on this super difficult high grip track, so with that in the back of our minds we were excited to find out how ‘racey’ the car was compared to all the other A Finalists….

Jon, like many others built up a new set of Schumacher Mini Pins (having like everyone else spent about 2 hours cutting off most of the tyre!!!) on the standard insert – something we were questioning before applying the super glue… with hindsight we may’ve felt a firmer insert would’ve helped… but hey, so might’ve Ben’s Set Up on the car… but you dont always get the time or opportunities!!

…as it was, Jon put in a blinder of a run and kept himself in touch with the Top 3 for much of the race, come the end, and with an extra Pit Stop strategy taking effect, we ended up a pretty solid 5th Overall with Reece a couple of spots further back!!

It’s one of those races where we will happily choose to look at the decent points gained, bank them, and take them on to the next round over at Deerdale… it’s about what we expected, and there’s plenty of the season, and points left to race for!!

Good work guys…

808 10 spec podium finish at Slough

April 14th, 2010

Report by Bren Ralls

Fresh from Neo & raring to test some parts spoilt for choice on tracks this weekend Kent or Slough Kent or Slough both great venues & a dilema right till i left in the morning. Kent being technical & slough being high speed & fast with precision required, well report showed my choice & slough it was.

A good field turned up with our Tommy Chung & old school electric driver Richard Barton who i have done battle with for many years, other quick guys to slough mike waller & simon turner would make for a competitive day. For team  Xray Bren & Rcdisco drivers Ricky Burnett & Ben Kennett.
A good practice session allowed us all to tune the cars while the officials booked us all in with a good turn out of 7 full heats the day would be busy & long . Engine i cant discuss but wow enough said. Car plenty of new ideas & thoughts following neo & came away from the event very happy with any changes made. Bren’s car stayed long rear wishbone & hub format but put diffs back to 553 thicker roll bars at 2.4 & 2.6 front wishbone flat & 10 deg castor blocks. This gave a good feel but steering was immence & led to a twitchy feel.

Rnd 1 Bren has a clean run no mistakes couldnt ask for any more, he had altered front end to inserts 0/0 & 14 deg castor this smoothed out steering giving an easy feel, went 3rd in round & 2 seconds of the tq spot. Ricky still getting used to bumps following a winter of TC & admitted himself he needed to push harder. Ben a couple of mistakes due to back markers but a solid run.

Rnd 2 Bren altered the front end to 12 deg castor for just that bit more initial steering, this it did & a well balanced car with pace feeling very good. Clipped the pipework on lap one & took a bit of time to settle back in, from here though it was clean & again 3rd in rnd with a quicker time. Ben & Ricky again solid runs with times safe for the B.

Rnd 3  track had grooved up & for Bren he was happy with the setup of the car, a change of tyres from caliber to bowfighters to suit conditions. Was straight on the pace but had a grip roll mid race & suffered the slowest marshal in the world, marshal those as you wish to be marshalled yourself hmmmmm think this one went to a different school. My fault though as i was the one on my roof 15 seconds though nearly half a lap ahhhhhh.
Ben again a very good run with a big grin coming off the rostrum as he had made no mistakes. Ricky now finding his offroad feet put in a solid run to go 3rd in the B.
Bren qualified 4th with 2×3rd in rounds so a good grid position.

The track was now dust free so revolvers where the way forward, giving plenty of turn in & traction.

The B started with Ricky getting a good start, Ben working from the rear of the grid had lots to do. With Ben unable to do 10 minute stops due to a new engine was punished in the pits & would not bump. Ricky on the other hand drove a faultless race & finished 2nd & was rewarded with a place in the main.

For the A the Drop of the flag & horn sounding we where off & Bren tucked inside of 3rd on the first corner to make a clean pass here he stayed for the next few corners till a slight bobble & collected by the persuing pack, yep you know from here & last. At this point Barton, turner, waller & Chung where 1/2 a lap up & the pack between what a challange. Bren slowy picking them off & pulled through the pack, a helping hand from Ricky as he let me throughcheers bud.  The easy 11+ minutes of fuel gave a great fuel window & into 4th. At 15 minutes was into 2nd but was as far as i could go Barton had to much of a lead from the beginning. 20 minutes no mistakes happy enough with that, a bobble can happen to any one so a pleasing result to the day. Ricky again a great run to go 8th overall well done bud
